07/31/2007 - Lisbon, Portugal (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Freddy Adu has signed with Portuguese club Benfica, ending the American teen's four-year stint in Major League Soccer.

MLS and Benfica agreed to a $2 million transfer fee for Adu last week. but the player and team couldn't reach agreement on a contract. Adu missed Real's game Saturday to travel to Portugal, where the sides were able to agree to a deal. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Adu, 18, trained with Benfica for the first time Tuesday.

Benfica is one of Portugal's most storied clubs. The team has won Portugal's top league 30 times, most recently in 2004-05. Benfica also won the Champions League in 1961 and '62.

Benfica finished third in the standings last year, two points behind champion FC Porto and one back Sporting Lisbon to earn a spot in the Champions League.

Although the Portugal doesn't measure up to the top leagues in other parts of Europe, it has produced international stars Christiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

Adu joined MLS four years ago at age 14. He played his first three seasons at D.C. United and joined Real Salt Lake in the offseason. After recently turning 18, he was able to pursue a career overseas.

Although he had just one goal and two assists in 11 MLS games this year, Adu recently captained the U.S. to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He had three goals and four assists in the tournament.

Clubs in England were interested in Adu, but it was unlikely he could attain a work permit to play in the country. A move to Portugal didn't present the same problem, opening the door for Adu's move.

Adu had 12 goals and 19 assists in four years in MLS. He played in 98 games, making 85 starts. He scored a career-high five goals in his rookie season and had a career-high eight assists last year for D.C.
